When the engraver comes to inscribe the names on the trophies for the 2007 Australian Superboat series, he will be double checking for mistakes. David Trask has won the Australian F1 Superboat series and nephew Grant Trask has won the F2000 national title.
The total domination of the Trask Development Corporation team was evident in that David Trask won the series despite being unable to contest the final round at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.
As the Australian round was staged on the ‘vacant’ weekend between the two rounds of the UIM World F1 Championship, David Trask together with his brother Bob returned to Sydney but were unable to race.
“We made a special point of returning to Australia for the last round, fully knowing that we could not race,” Bob Trask said. “We wanted to be on hand to support my son Grant who was leading the F2000 series.”
“The logistics of preparing our two boat team for two rounds of the UIM World F1 Championship in China locked us out of the Sydney round. It’s relatively easy for us as drivers to front up and drive the boats, but for our crew, they simply can’t be in two places at once.”
With his father and uncle on the team lending support, Grant Trask enjoyed a stellar day at Sydney. Not only did he qualify fastest and take pole position, but he also went out and won all three heats in a very convincing fashion.
After wining the Australian F3 title in 2006, Grant Trask has adapted exceptionally well to the bigger and faster F2000 class.
Running a GTR race hull similar to the F1 hulls campaigned by Bob & David Trask, Grant has a F2000 Mercury race engine on the transom. This is a smaller and less powerful outboard than the engines used in the F1 class. Despite the reduction in power, Grant Trask’s boat is still a weapon and is good for speeds in excess of 176 kph (110 mph).
“The 2007 Australian series has been a good one for the whole Trask Development Corporation team,” Bob Trask reflected.
“David has emerged the Australian title holder and Grant has done extraordinarily well in his first year of F2000. We went out to win the championship and so have achieved our goals – at the same time we have taken the opportunity to race hard and develop our race boats so that we are better and more competitive overseas.”
“I would like to think that the presence of our three boat team at all but one of the Australian rounds has been good for boat racing in Australia and it has also helped our local teams become better race units.”
The next round of the 2007 UIM World F1 Powerboat series is to be staged at Shenzhen, China on Sunday October 21st.
